Human Resources Online - 5 March 2009
Half of the 3,600 SIngaporeans say they are willing to work for lower pay if they find real value in their work, finds the latest Kelly Global Workforce Index 2009.
This figure for SIngapore ranked below many other places in Asia Pacific. In China, 63% of the employees are willing to take home a little lesser while 62% in India are willing to compromise. Outside the Asia Pacific region, Singapore still falls short behind United Kingdom and Australia, with 56% and 55% respectively.
Locally, it was discovered that the baby boomers are less reluctant to sacrifice their salary for more meaningful work as compared to Generation Y employees, with 60% of them willing to take a pay cut compared to their younger counterparts at only 47%. However, Generation Y employees in Singapore are the most unwilling to compromise, with counterparts in the other Asian regions are more agreeable at 55%.
In spite of this, the 84% of Singaporeans say that the work they perform gives them a sense of pride.
Dhirendra Shantilal, senior vice-president of Kelly Services says the findings highlight the importance of employers in helping to bring out the best in their workforce by tailoring work tat is engaging, stimulating and which encourages people to learn new skills."
"The survey indicated that employees in Singapore (especially Gen X employees) continue to search for new jobs even in very challenging conditions. This shows that employees' aspirations are constantly changing over the course of a cereer so it is important to recognise the things that are important at each stage in order to build and maintain a motivated, stable and high-performing workforce," Shantilal adds.
